Arthritis, tendon strain, filled legs: when to use Dead Sea mud on your horse

One tub covers most day-to-day care, as prevention and as recovery.

Filled legs and soft-tissue swelling

After a night in the stable or a long journey: the mud boosts circulation and helps the legs come down.

Arthritis and joint pain

As a routine treatment for horses in work, or as a short course during a flare-up.

Tendon strain, windgalls and soft swellings

On a warm tendon, a windgall or a knock with swelling, before the inflammation settles in.

Recovery and remineralisation after work

The end-of-session habit: it relaxes the muscles and helps the body clear toxins.

Sweet itch and skin irritation

Where the skin is unbroken: a band along the crest of the neck and at the base of the tail.

Mud fever and cracked heels

A generous 1–2 cm layer on the affected area, left uncovered overnight. Wash off in the morning, dry the legs thoroughly, repeat daily.

Thrush

Wash the area thoroughly, pack the hoof with mud, cover with a plastic bag and bandage to hold it. Wash off in the morning and repeat daily.

Rain scald

A 1–2 cm layer over the affected area.

Laminitis

Alongside your vet’s treatment: chilled in the fridge for an hour, it brings cooling relief to the foot.

Do not apply to open or bleeding wounds. Use Thermequin Cream on broken skin instead.

How to apply Dead Sea mud to a horse, and how long to leave it on

Ready to use: no mixing, no preparation.

  1. Apply

A thin layer in direct contact with the skin, anywhere on the body. Avoid the mucous membranes, the head and any broken skin.

  2. Leave on

30 minutes minimum, ideally until completely dry. The areas that dry slowest are the areas under tension.

  3. Remove

Brush off once dry, or rinse with water. Whatever remains crumbles away on its own without bothering the horse.

For a cooling effect: one hour in the fridge before applying. · Under bandages: use damp kraft paper, never newspaper. · In winter: warm the tub between two hot water bottles. · To speed hair regrowth: cover the mud with a warm damp towel under a rug or bandage.

Why Dead Sea mud is richer than clay

Neither clay nor marine mud: a difference in nature as much as in concentration. It is the first question in our FAQ, so here is the answer, in figures.

Criterion Thermequin Terre Ordinary clay
Mineral concentration + 30% baseline
Magnesium 24% traces
Nature Dead Sea silt Terrestrial clay
Texture Very fine, moulds to the skin Grainy
Iodine None Depends on origin
Effect on skin Hydrates, doesn’t block pores Dries it out
Horses that react to clay Well tolerated Reactions possible

Frequently asked questions from our customers

Is it clay?
No, it’s not clay or marine mud at all! Its mineral concentration is much higher +30% The mud is much more like silt and much richer in minerals including magnesium (+24%) which will be absorbed by the cells to regenerate optimally. As a result, its texture is much finer and more delicate than clay, which explains the thin layer.
Are there any essential oils in the composition?
We do not add any essential oils (EO) in the composition but natural oils.
How to apply it?
It is applied like clay in a thinner layer to all parts of the body, avoiding mucous membranes, the head and wounds. It must be in contact with the skin.
What is its exposure time?
We recommend a minimum of 30 minutes, however it is preferable to let it dry in order to let the cells absorb the quantity of minerals they need and at the same time observe the areas which are hot (tension) and will put more time to dry.
Is it a problem to leave it in place?
Whether your horse lives in the box or in the meadow, the mud after working will mostly crumble and fall off without creating any discomfort.
Does mud work on osteoarthritis? How to apply it?
It works very well to relieve pain related to osteoarthritis and reduce inflammation. Simply apply it as a care routine for ridden horses or as a treatment for a few days when there is an attack.
In what cases can it be applied?
On tendon inflammations, lumps or any soft defects, contracted muscles, engorgement, blow with swelling.... More generally, as soon as there is engorgement, pain, inflammation or prevention (preparation and recovery).
How to create a cold effect when applying?
Place it in the fridge for 1 hour before application, it will cool down to restore it.
Can we use it under tape?
Yes, we just recommend putting wet kraft paper (no newspaper) in order to let it work.
How to use it to relieve dermatitis?
Without a wound present, apply a strip along the crest of the neck and at the base of the tail.
Can we use on the back?
Yes, it can be used on all parts of the body, in winter it is important to warm it up a little (for example between 2 hot water bottles) before applying it.
Why do we call it magic mud?
For a natural product, it works and produces surprising results wherever it is used, thanks to its concentration of minerals unique in the world.
Are your containers plastic?
Yes, all our containers are made of recyclable plastic. Moreover, we invite you to recycle them, they may become the future shirt of your mount. We are working on containers resistant to Dead Sea salts.
