Protecting your horse from flies, louse flies and ticks

From April to October, flies, horseflies, midges, louse flies and ticks harass horses: stress, tail swishing, bites and sometimes allergies. Two complementary protections: a repellent shampoo for the whole body, and a barrier balm for the most targeted areas.

Flies, horseflies, ticks: why protect your horse?

Beyond the nuisance, repeated bites irritate the skin, make the horse rub and can trigger sweet itch in allergic horses. Ticks latch onto areas of thin skin and need to be removed quickly.

The louse fly, or forest fly (hippoboscid), is the hardest to get rid of: a flat, hard body, clawed legs that grip the skin, and an annoying habit of hardly ever leaving its host. It hides on the inside of the thighs, under the tail, around the sheath or udder, and bites to feed on blood. It is active from April to October, peaking in summer.

Repellent shampoo and summer balm: two complementary protections

  • Repellent Shampoo: cleans, nourishes and keeps ticks, flies, horseflies and mites away for 12 to 24 hours depending on conditions. Its essential oils of peppermint, eucalyptus, citronella, lavender and tea tree do the work, and it neutralises the smells that attract insects. Highly concentrated: one dose in a bucket of water is enough.
  • Summer Balm: a beeswax barrier that withstands rubbing, against flies, midges, mosquitoes, louse flies, ticks, fleas and mites. Free from essential oils, it suits sensitive or pale skin and helps repair skin damaged by rubbing. Once a day, on the ears, chest, belly, base of the mane and tail.

Good habits against insects at the yard

Check the louse flies' and ticks' favourite spots every day when grooming. Keep the stable and its surroundings clean, pick up droppings in the paddocks, and use fly rugs and masks for the most sensitive horses.

Fly repellent for horses: frequently asked questions

Summer balm or repellent shampoo: which one?

The shampoo for whole-body protection at every wash, for all horses during insect season; the balm for targeted application, area by area, on sensitive or pale skin and rubbed areas. The two can be combined.

How long does the protection last?

12 to 24 hours for the shampoo, depending on conditions. The balm is reapplied once a day, or more depending on insect pressure and the horse's activity.

My horse has sensitive skin, what should I choose?

The summer balm: free from essential oils, it keeps the risk of allergy and photosensitivity in the sun to a minimum. The repellent shampoo is the only product in the range that contains essential oils.

How do I get rid of louse flies?

By combining a daily check of thin-skinned areas, the balm's barrier on those areas, and washes with the repellent shampoo during the season.
